Star Trek: Voyager: Season 03 (1997)

Star Trek: Voyager: Season 03 (1997)
Member Rating:
Season three of Star Trek: Voyager begins with the titular space vessel still in the hands of the enemy Kazon, and Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and most of her crew still stranded on Hanon IV, a desolate planet that closely resembles a prehistoric Earth. Eventually extricating themselves from this situation, the crew survives to embark on innumerable other adventures in their efforts to escape the distant Gamma Quadrant and return to their Starfleet Command home base. Highlight episodes this season include the two-part "Future's End," in which the crew must alter events of the 20th century to avert catastrophe in their own time; "The Q and the Gray," in which familiar Star Trek: The Next Generation nemesis Q (John DeLancie) demands that Janeway bear him a child; "Coda," wherein Janeway comes face to face with her deceased father; "The Darkling," which finds the holographic Doctor (Robert Picardo) generating a hostile version of himself; and "Before & After," in which Ocampan crew member Kes (Jennifer Lien) is given a most disturbing glimpse into the future. The traditional cliffhanger ending of Star Trek: Voyager's third season finds Janeway forced to forge an alliance with our old "friends," the Borg, in order to vanquish an even more powerful enemy. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

1997 was a great year for Trek fans. For fans of the Voyager franchise it was especially good. The show had finally found its mojo and the writing staff were allowed to have fun with the series. While Season 3 begins with the forgettable conclusion of Season 2's cliffhanger, "Basics" (Disc 1), the episodes take a turn for the better and end with the first new twist on the Borg saga in years with "Scorpion" (Disc 7). Viewers are treated to several particularly entertaining episodes in "False Profits" (Ferrengi, Disc 2), "Futures End" 1 & 2 (Mid-season two-parter!, Disc 2 & 3) and "The Q And The Grey" (Q-Verse, Disc 3). "Blood Fever" (Disc 4) and "Darkling" (Disc 5). Perhaps the best episode is "Distant Origin" (Disc 6), an examination of reality versus dogma (by re-imagining the Galileo story). Overall, Season 3 can be highly recommended for fans of the Trek alti-verse, or sci-fi in general.

I would like to just enter in a correction to the synopsis in Blockbuster for Season Three. The crew are stranded in the Delta Quadrant not Gamma Quadrant. Otherwise, just wanted to say I just love this Star Trek show! I think Captain Janeway is brilliant, smart, strong, and caring. It really is a brilliant cast!

Yet again what can I say. I love the Voyager shows. They are very good.
