After the witches (Susan Dury, Judith Harte, Marie Kean) announce the prophecy that Macbeth (Ian McKellen) will be the next king, the elderly King Duncan (Griffith Jones) proclaims that his son, Malcolm (Roger Rees), will be heir to the throne. Lady Macbeth (Judi Dench) learns about the witches' prophecy in a letter, prompting he to ask the gods to remove her femininity so she can make her weak husband kill the king. When Duncan comes to visit Macbeth's castle, he is murdered in his sleep. Macbeth kills the guards, claiming they were the murderers. In fear of their own lives, Duncan's sons flee the country and Macbeth is crowned King of Scotland. Just a warning that if you want good acting this is it, but the whole production is done without any background. The actors stand in darkness with spotlights on them. They have costumes, and somtimes there is fog, but no setting at all. I still enjoyed it though so I gave it a high rating.

This is considered one of the best performances of this play in the 20th century, often called in academic circles as the "Minimalist" version. In an intro here as an extra, McKellen gives a brief history of this performance, and notes that this play is really more of a horror show than a drama. It is rather bloody (for a stage production) so be careful of the little ones around as you watch. But without all the clutter of sets or scenery, this production does show that indeed, "the Play's the thing" (that's Hamlet, I know, but it fits here). A "horrible" performance, in the truest sense, of a descent into utter madness, and a must-see.

This production is worth seeing more than once. The background features are excellent too.
