NOVA: Ants - Little Creatures Who Run the World (1995)
Member Rating:
This television documentary follows the amazing lives of ants. They outnumber humans a million to one, there are 10,000 types known, and their total weight equals that of the human race. Professor Edward O. Wilson of Harvard University believes that ants may have the edge on humans as a biological success. The key to this success is how well they work together. Some 30 million years ago, descendants of the early wasps shed their wings and the greatest insect force of all time was established: the ants. They retained the powerful jaws and stings to become a major predatory force. Their strength came from working together. The show continues to show the evolution of ants, the different types of ants, and how they perform their individual roles as part of a greater society. ~ Thomas Carpenter, Rovi

This movie gives great up-close shots of tiny little creatures, and gives them almost human personalities as Edward O. Wilson relates the world of ants to the world of humans. He illustrates how they have remained almost unchanged, as we have evolved, and shows us how different ants across the world survive using different strategies. Shows miraculous complexity of ant life. Great movie for explaining how we relate to nature and how tiny creatures can survive global catastrophe.
