Lost Highway (1997)
Member Rating:
Five years after the critical and commercial disappointment of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, director David Lynch returned to the big screen with this cryptic thriller about confused identities and erotic obsession. Fred (Bill Pullman) is an avant-garde jazz saxophonist who shares a luxurious but fashionably barren house with his wife Renee (Patricia Arquette). Fred suspects that Renee may be unfaithful to him, but realizes he has bigger things to worry about when a series of videotapes appear at his door that prove someone is watching his home from the outside and inside. When Renee is found murdered, Fred finds himself behind bars, but one morning Fred is no longer in his cell. He has seemingly been transformed into Pete Drayton (Balthazar Getty), a young auto mechanic who foolishly allowed himself to get involved with the wife of gangster Dick Laurent (Robert Loggia), a luscious blonde named Alice who looks exactly like Renee. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

having watched three david lynch movies now i understand what he is doing. his work is bizarre and strange. certain scenes are scary and wierd. there is no story arc. there is no predictable ending. unusual, enigmatic characters, scenes without conclusions or lessons learned are normal with him. i like the acting and the atmosphere he creates -- paranoid, schizophrenic, detachment from reality. i like stories that make sense and teach us things. lynch likes confusing and amazing you. if you want a happy ending, forget it. if you want a fully-rounded story with beginning, middle and end, forget it. this is slice-of-life shots of bizarre, disturbed people in bad situations. he's more about feeling and texture than he is about substance or substantive story-telling. his flicks are designed to make you have an experience, not explain anything to you.

I tried, but this movie was confusing. Not sure what point the movie was trying to convey. However, I diid like the casting, the movie itself was suspenseful, and the soundtrack was pretty good

What great cinema is at times. Lots of symbolism and the type of movie that sticks with you for a long time after. unlike some of lynch's movies, I believe there is a method and storyline here. Very atmospheric and well done. Lynch is able to get great performances out of his actors.
