With the Third Reich disintegrating, several members of the German army are defecting to the Americans and offering their services as spies. US officer Gary Merrill trusts none of these last-minute "converts", but German prisoner Oskar Werner seems to be sincere. Werner insists that by helping the Americans, he is saving Germany from destruction. Merrill sends Werner behind enemy lines for counter-espionage with an American officer (Richard Basehart), who still isn't convinced that the German expatriate means what he says. At several critical junctures, it seems as though Werner had been lying about his mission, but at the last moment he saves Basehart's life at the cost of his own...but was this act of bravery intentional? A thoughtful World War II drama, Decision Before Dawn was filmed on location in Europe. Watch for a young and sickly-looking Klaus Kinski as an overeager defector. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is undoubtedly one of the finest war films I have ever seen... the realism is fantastic..it seems to have been made while the real war was going on! The characters are sensational and true to life like I have never seen before. Richard Basehart and Gary Merril are no nonsense officers with very difficult missions to accomplish and they do so realistically. And a very, very young Oscar Werner does an exceptionally commendable mission as a german turncoat. This is one of the most un- hollywood films you'll ever see. 5 stars!

This film explores what it means to be a traitor against your own country, when your country is in the wrong, and a true citizen should take the other path. It is the near end of WWII, and the Allies are about to enter Germany. A special intelligence unit of the U.S. Army sorts through the horde of freshly captured German prisoners they have, and recruits some to return to Germany and spy for the Allies. Most sent back are caught, some aren't. This movie follows the mission of one such German agent, and while even in 1951 the format here still smacks of a little too much WWII breathless propaganda, the film explores some very interesting themes and is fairly suspenseful, but with a weak, and much too abrupt ending that doesn't quite ring true. Rent this movie for war movie nostalgia night over a couple of beers.
