The TARDIS seems emptier without Barbara and Ian - at least until the Doctor and Vicki discover that the astronaut Steven stowed away before they left Mechanus. Steven's skepticism toward time travel pushes the Doctor to confront him with living proof. Shortly after landing on a beach in England, they discover a Viking helmet, but Steve remains unconvinced. Instructing Steve and Vicki to wait with the TARDIS, the Doctor seeks further proof. Heedless of the Doctor's warning, Steven persuades Vicki to explore the cliffs above the beach, where they find an abandoned wristwatch. Meanwhile, the Doctor investigates a ruined monastery, where he encounters an electric toaster, a gramophone playing ecclesiastic chants, and a monk who traps him in an alcove. Eventually, the Doctor realizes that the famous Battle of Hastings is only a few weeks away. That should provide ample proof for Steven, but who is this mysterious monk, and what is his interest in the events of 1066?

Good episode of the original William Hartnell Doctor Who. 2nd season ender. Another Time Lord is wreaking havoc with history. A lot of people surmise that this may perhaps be an early regeneration of the Master, however, no mention is ever made of this person being or becoming the master. Just another bad Time Lord like the Master or Rani with their own TARDIS. The Monk Time Lord also makes an appearance in another William Hartnell doctor who episode The Dalek's Master Plan. Steven and Vicki are the recent companions after Ian and Barbara left (the Chase) and also Susan (The Dalek Invasion of Earth). Enjoy.

This was a lot of fun. Very watchable and enjoyable for those of us who came late to the Dr. Who bandwagon!

A very entertaining story where the Doctor confronts the Meddling Monk, who is the first bad guy time lord in the series (Although he's not referred to as a time lord it's obvious from later stories). Unlike later time lord bad guys such as the Master, the Monk is played as more jovial and not quite a sinister character. Overall a fun episode that expands the mythology of the series at this point.
