Day Break (2005)
Member Rating:
A convicted Iranian murderer who has been sentenced to death struggles to comprehend his impending doom while languishing in a Tehran prison in director Hamid Rahmanian's existential drama. When convicted of certain serious crimes in Iran, the family of the victim can either choose to pardon the perpetrator of the crime, pursue financial compensation from the offender, or opt for public execution -- a weighty choice that demands the family of the victim meet with the convict before the sentence is carried out. Though the family of Mansour's (Hossein Yari) victim have chosen the most final of the three options, their repeated absence at the scheduled meeting that must take place before his execution forces the convicted killer into a personal purgatory of doubt and angst more torturous than any death sentence. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

"Variety" Review: A condemned man's wrenching wait for his own execution works like a ticking time bomb in Hamid Rahmanian's flawed but impressive debut feature, "Day Break." As many Iranian cineastes are cleverly managing, Rahmanian takes the basis of an actual Islamic law -- permitting the family of a murder victim to personally carry out the execution of the convicted murderer -- as profound material for a spare and almost unbearably tense drama.
