Into Great Silence (2005)
Member Rating:
In this contemplative documentary from filmmaker Philip Gröning, the Grande Chartreuse monastery opens its doors to the public for the first time since being founded by St. Bruno in 1084 to offer an intimate look at a lifestyle rarely experienced by those outside of the brotherhood. Located in the remote regions of the French Alps, near the Dauphiné Alps, the Grande Chartreuse is the top monastery of the Carthusian order. In this documentary, the lives of the pious monks of Grande Chartreuse are captured on film as director Groening adapts to their ascetic lifestyle for six months and captures their daily life without the intrusion of voice-over, musical score, interviews, or archival footage. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie isn't just a documentary on the life of a monk, it's a chance for you to experience this life for yourself. If you are looking for entertainment or something that merely informs you, then you need to look elsewhere. This life is one that few are called to. These men are the Green Beret of Christian spirituality. Since few are called to this kind of life, and since this movie gives you an experience of this life, I can see where many would find this movie boring. But there are many of us who feel God drawing us to more silence, to more quiet time with Him. If you feel this tug, then this movie will inspire you.

Settle in for a quiet time to appreciate the life and world of this monastery. It is difficult to imagine oneself leading this life and yet you get the feeling of envy of not having to face the world as we do everyday. Keep a blanket handy. You will find yourself getting a litttle chilly.

Watch the "extras" present on disc 2 first and disc 1 will make SO MUCH more sense. Unfortunately, they send the discs in order - unless you specify. The scenery is awe-inspiring; the chanting meditative and even though it's a tiresome pace, ultimately I felt grateful that there are people like this who can forsake everything (even speaking) to commit to a life closer to God
