Filmmaker Patricia Foulkrod produced and directed this documentary, designed to shed light on a little examined side of war -- the soldiers who do the fighting. The Ground Truth: The Human Cost of War focuses on the men and women who fought in the War in Iraq, but found themselves largely ignored in the media coverage of the conflict and in their treatment by the military bureaucracy when they came back from the front lines. In extensive interviews with veterans of the Iraq war, these men and women talk about the hardships of war, the danger of serving in a country where the people you defend often consider you the enemy, the onset of post-traumatic stress disorder, the gap between media coverage of the war and the grim realities soldiers see on the battlefield, and the often callous treatment extended to soldiers by military authorities and the Veterans Administration. The Ground Truth was planned with a March 2005 release in mind, in hopes of having the film in theaters in time for the second anniversary of the beginning of the war. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Seeing and hearing our current Iraq War veterans talk about their experiences pre-, during and post-conflict in Patricia Foulkrod's THE GROUND TRUTH is spellbinding, surprising, illuminating & saddening--even if you imagine, as I had, that you are already convinced of our folly over there. This is not a "balanced" view, not should it be, as it comes from veterans who feel strongly that, not only should we not have involved our country in this war, but what we are doing over there is constant hindrance and often a horror. This is just for starters. What happens to the traumatized men and women sent back from Iraq is the film's real raison d'etre, and it's here that the bomb drops most damagingly. Compared to "Last Letters Home," another Iraq war documentary that I happened to watch the same day, "The Ground Truth" is a wake-up call to a county whose population--as shocking and appalling as this is--still seems to be asleep at the wheel and rounding yet another curve atop the cliff.

I believe this is NOT a small percentage of how the military feels about this war. My husband is in the military. People in the military can not speak out against the war without having negative consequences come upon them. People in the military are committed to doing their job and it is a shame that they have been put in situations that are completely WRONG. The soldiers in this film explain how they feel very well. They are loyal people who just wanted to do the right thing, and were forced into situations that they knew were bad and against their moral belief. Let's say it is "just a few" (which it's not... more than half of America feels we are doing the wrong thing) how can we disregard what they are saying? This affects all of us! Even though we have been told, "Go about your lives, don't be inconvenienced..." WE ALL NEED TO PAY ATTENTION to what is being said here. It is not a left or right issue it is an AMERICAN issue! See this film and YOU decide.

Very informative, even to people who think they know everything and that the "war on terror is just and will end when we get 'em". Not a liberal view on the war, but rather the truth about what happens to people when they are sent to war and how it changes them. In fact, 400 of america's casualties(10%) are from suicides commited IN IRAQ.
