Bad Education (2004)
Member Rating:
Filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar takes a look at his own adolescence as well as confronting the issue of sexual misconduct in the Catholic Church in this stylish drama, which was chosen to open the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Enrique Goded (Fele Martínez) is a Spanish filmmaker who is having trouble settling on a new project when he's approached by Ignacio Rodriguez (Gael García Bernal), who was his close friend when they were schoolboys. Goded, who fell in love for the first time with Rodriguez, barely recognizes the man as his former crush, but agrees to read the short story he's written. The tale turns out to be an semi-autobiographical account of their days in a Catholic boarding school, in which a cross-dressing night-club performer named Zahara (also played by Bernal) hooks up with a man named Enrique (Alberto Ferreiro), who turns out to have been his first lover when he was a student. Recalling their school days, Zahara tracks down Father Manolo (Daniel Giménez Cacho), one of his teachers from school with pedophilic tendencies, and threatens to expose the priest's attempts to seduce him and ruin his relationship with Enrique years ago. Goded decides to use the story as the basis for his next film, and Rodriguez, an out-of-work actor, makes it clear he's eager to play Zahara. However, Goded isn't certain if Rodriguez is the right actor for the role, or if he's even the man he claims to be; an angry conflict with Rodriguez leads Goded back to the real Ignacio's mother (Petra Martínez). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Apparently Blockbuster does not censor or edit movies, as they claim in their FAQs. However, they only carry the R version of this film - with no reference to the fact that it is an edited version of the original NC-17 release (which Netflix carries). Thanks Blockbuster, but I am an adult and I prefer to choose for myself.

I became on overnight fan of Gael Garcia Bernal after seeing him in "The Motorcycle Diaries," so I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this DVD. Without a doubt, one of the best films I have seen all year, if not in the last several years -- erotic, suspenseful, full of suprising twists and flawlessly directed and acted. However, I was very disappointed to discover that I was getting a "censored" version from Blockbuster. (One scene is very heavily "pixilated" while some others may have been cut altogether.) They should be ashamed of themselves for tampering with this masterpiece in any way. I am an adult, and I don't need someone else to determine what I may or may not find offensive. I prefer to make those decisions for myself. I will look elsewhere to find an uncut version of this film as it appeared in theaters, because it is certainly worth seeing again in its entirety.

Captivating, intriguing and very sexy from beginning to end. The plot is fantastic, the acting superb and direction a master piece. I just regret to have seen it through Blockbuster, as they decided to make their cut and still have as NC17 rating. I thought that after The Advocate's report they would finally lift their ban on NC17 movies... Well never the less La Mala Educacion is definitely one of the best movies I have seen lately.
