Member Rating:
Acclaimed French director François Truffaut's third and, for many viewers, best film is an adaptation of a semi-autobiographical novel by Henri-Pierre Roché. Set between 1912 and 1933, it stars Oskar Werner as the German Jules and Henri Serre as the Frenchman Jim, kindred spirits who, while on holiday in Greece, fall in love with the smile on the face of a sculpture. Back in Paris, the smile comes to life in the person of Catherine (Jeanne Moreau); the three individuals become constant companions, determined to live their lives to the fullest despite the world war around them. When Jules declares his love for Catherine, Jim agrees to let Jules pursue her, despite his own similar feelings; Jules and Catherine marry and have a child (Sabine Haudepin), but Catherine still loves Jim as well. An influential film that has grown in stature over the decades, Jules et Jim was often viewed by the counterculture of the 1960s as a cinematic proponent of the free-love movement, but in actuality the picture is a statement against such a way of life. Despite the bond shared by Jules, Jim, and Catherine, their ménage à trois is doomed to fail; and Catherine's inability to choose between the two men leads to tragic consequences for all three. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Jules and Jim is the classic "French" love triangle with a woman named Catherine. It's not just about betrayal, lust, egocentrism and sacrifice. It's about how we as humans always chase the dream rather than live in reality. Jules sees things for what they are, while Jim and Catherine are living through hopes and fantasies. In the end, Catherine realizes that only in a permanent dream (death) can she truely be happy. So, she chooses the other dreamer to join her: Jim. In a coup d'instant, she crashes her car killing Jim and herself. This is a very interesting film. It's far from the predicatable films that we see in Hollywood. This film mimics true life... the self-deteriorating relationships that plague so many of us. They persist even though there is no rhyme or reason. This film puts it out there in black and white, showing us how these relationships may seem benign but are really a cancer for all that surround it.

Cinematically intriguing, especially for it's time. The story an old one of two friends and one wild at heart woman & a strange triangle of a relatonship and we watch as it changes but yet remains over the years, untl it ends how one might expect but with just a little more...panash. Rapid fire subtitles on this one so if you do not speak French - be forewarned.

I love the song. My grandmother used to sing it but I had no idea where it came from. What a surprise when Catherine sang the first words! The whole movie is on the disk 1, you can just cancel the second. I was expecting a 4-hour-long movie but the end just came when I didn't expect it... Unpredicatble and good. It gives a sense to the movie, to the characters, and to the song.
