Heavy Petting (1989)
Member Rating:
Those of us who had to suffer such "instructional" films as Dating Do's and Don'ts in high school will be especially entertained by Heavy Petting. In the visually sarcastic manner of the nuclear-age documentary The Atomic Cafe, the film assembles masses of information and misinformation about teenage dating rituals of the 1950s. Clips from contemporary movies, TV programs, commercials, and "sex hygiene" short subjects are used throughout; perhaps once upon a time these vignettes could have been taken seriously, but here they're only good for howls of laughter. Interspersed among the vintage footage are interviews with such children of the 1960s as David Byrne and William S. Burroughs. One look at the 1950s as depicted in Heavy Petting, and it's easy to see how the sensuous, psychedelic '60s came to be. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I agree that the first disc was not as funny as I thought it would be, but you should definitely get the second disc. There are like 10 short films on there, some of them shockingly funny. I highly recommend the second disc.

enjoyed listening to the interviews. They were really a bunch of screwed up people. I think it was just long enough to not be boring

I got the film, I even enjoyed it somewhat, but I doubt you will miss not getting this one. David Byrne looks almost embarrassed in his interview--did someone forget to tell him that sex would be mentioned? The interview with William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg is rather painful to watch, especially in the extras that were cut. Watching Burroughs shift, clear his throat, and mumble his answers was enough to make me want to hit fast forward. Ginsberg was interesting enough, discussing the perils of realizing his homosexuality. Sandra Bernhard's interview was one big BORE; it is obvious she thinks using the "f-word" is the edge to make her more interesting. I will admit the interviews with Abbie Hoffman and Spalding Gray were engaging enough. Honestly, the movie is not clever. Just watch the bits that were cut in the extras section and you have a better film.
