Hyenas (1992)

Hyenas (1992)
Member Rating:
This Senegalese film is based on the play The Visit by Friedrich Durrenmatt. The Wolof-language film satirizes the influence of Western materialism on traditional Africa as Linguerre (Ami Diakhate), a Senegalese woman, returns to her village after a life in exile. Thirty years earlier, she became pregnant by a local merchant (Mansour Diouf). The man denied her claims that he was the child's father and went further to accuse her of adultery with other men from the village. The woman's life in exile has actually been quite prosperous, while her village is in a state of poverty. Linguerre is wealthy, and is willing to bail the village out of its financial misfortune -- in exchange for the life of the man who betrayed her decades earlier. The film holds a sharply critical view of capitalism and its effect on traditional values. ~ Jonathan E. Laxamana, Rovi

Having spent time in Senegal, and with an interest in the original Durrenmatt play, I was looking forward to this film. The folk myth-like quality of the narrative seems especially well suited to the African setting -- one can imagine it translating powerfully on stage, backed by tribal rhythms and dance. Unfortunately, the film squanders any such possibilities. There is no flow from scene to scene. It feels clumsy and stilted. My interest evaporated quickly. In short, a big disappointment.

While I have not watched this movie yet, the description IMMEDIATELY rang a bell in me. This is a very famous book of swiss author Friedrich Duerrenmatt, "Der Besuch der alten Dame" (engl. "the visit of the old lady", the title of the english version of this book might be different though). Every student at school MUST read this book, by law, it is required for german teenagers. It is about morals and the lesson that, even after decades, you will not escape your evil deeds you committed earlier. It may be late, but eventually your crimes, lies and betrayes will catch you. While I hated the book at the age of 13, now at 44 I do like the story. I find it odd that this important fact (being a remake of a famous book) is not even mentioned in the movie's description. did BB-staff not know the story by Duerrenmatt?
