Apachen (1973)

Apachen (1973)
Member Rating:
Gottfried Kolditz's 1973 Apachen constitutes an East German Western, influenced by (and made in the mold of) classic American cinematic forays into the Old West, such as the works of Howard Hawks and John Ford. The picture covers some of the same territory as Robert Aldrich in his 1972 Ulzana's Raid. It begins with the mass slaughter of a group of Apaches at the dawn of the Mexican American War, and then follows Apache chief Ulzana as he rallies his fellow warriors, hell-bent on bloodthirsty revenge. Gojko Mitic, Willi Schrade, Colea Rautu, Gerry Wolff, Fred Delmare, Leon Niemczyk, and Rolf Hoppe co-star. Kolditz followed it up with a sequel, the 1974 Ulzana. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

I write this review to help others decide if this movie is for them. I recently decided to learn everything I can about American Indians. I selected this movie along with many others to view. The entire movie is in German. The good news is that there is an option to turn on English subtitles. The actors are not speaking in German so the lip movement does not match the words. I found myself watching the movie without sound and reading the subtitles. Once you get past the language issues, the story is a Western where I found myself cheering for the Indians based on the events in the movie. Early in the movie Indians are massacred after they were tricked into thinking that food was being offered to them in good faith. The rest of the story plays out the sequence of events that follow. For a good background on the real events that took place you should also rent “Great Indian Wars: 1540-1890” [a Collection in 3 Discs] (2005).
