Una Carta de Amor (Love Letters) is an overlong, but never dull, Mexican romantic yarn. Set in the 19th century, the film is told in flashback from the point-of-view of condemned prisoner Jorge Negrete. Facing execution for "crimes" against the repressive government, Negrete recalls happier times with his late wife Gloria Marin. He remembers how Marin, a political naif, eventually stood nobly by his side during his insurrectionist activities. Also remembered in tear-stained detail is Marin's ultimate self-sacrifice on behalf of her husband. Director Miguel Zacarias also wrote the screenplay, doing a masterful job in both capacities. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
