The Refuge
Director Nigel Baker teams with writer Simon Ricketts to explore the topics of religious and political freedom with this provocative thriller concerning two Kurdish exiles from Iraq who find their attempt to seek exile in London hopelessly complicated by international politics. Mahmoud and Rezghar risked their lives smuggling themselves out of Iraq, and now they're determined to reap the rewards of living in a country that promises opportunity and freedom. But a glitch in "the system" has singled out these two desperate men for deportation, and should they return to Iraq they will both surely be killed. Seeking sanctuary in a London church, Mahmoud and Rezghar plead their case to sympathetic priest Father Michael, who always tries to do the right thing. Now, as the authorities begin pressuring Father Michael to release the boys, the clergyman does his best to contend with the growing anger of the authorities, church officials, and his own congregation while Mahmoud and Rezghar grow more desperate with each passing hour. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
