The Island at the End of the World
The "island" in question is the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia; this locale was introduced to the majority of the world by explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, who of course died in a perilous expedition to the Antarctic in 1915. With the documentary The Island at the End of the World, naturalist and global explorer Greg Grainger embarks on the exact same route as Shackleton with a multi-person crew in tow, including: seasoned mountain climber Greg Mortimer; Tony Wheeler, progenitor of the Lonely Planet series of guide books; and Brenda Shackleton, distantly related to Sir Ernest. Together, these brave voyagers kick-start their journey at the southern tip of South America, cross over to the Falkland Islands on a Russian ice breaker, traverse the Arctic Convergence, and finally reach South Georgia, where they both take in such exotic wildlife as the Wandering Albatross and King Penguins, and meet an indigenous people group known as the Carr's. Then, in the last stretch of the program, the explorers attempt to retrace the final, fatal steps of Shackleton's journey - only to run headfirst into massive natural obstacles - and embark on a trip to Ernest Shackleton's place of burial. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
