The Guide
This drama, the only screenplay Pearl S. Buck ever wrote, chronicles the exploits of Raju, a plucky young Indian tour guide who is hired by Marco, an archaeologist, who wants to show his wife Rosie around the local ruins. Raju shows her a good deal more than ruins, and the two become lovers. He offers to help her resume her career as a dancer. Her husband leaves her, and she is free to become Raju's mistress. Later she leaves him after she becomes famous. Raju is then put in jail for forgery. Upon his release, he begins aimlessly wandering about the deserted ruins and there the villagers mistake him for a guru. He does not dissuade them from the illusion. When a drought occurs he vows to fast until it rains. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
