The Barber of Seville
The Barber of Seville contains an archival recording of one of the first widely-televised operas -- a performance of Gioacchino Rossini's celebrated comic opera The Barber of Seville -- originally broadcast on Christmas day, December 25, 1959. The by-now-familiar story involves Count Almaviva's devoted attempts to win the heart of the gorgeous Rosina and wrest her away from her guardian, Dr. Bartolo, with the assistance of the clever Figaro, the Sevillian barber of the title. This particular production stars Hermann Prey as Figaro, Fritz Wunderlich as Almaviva, Erika Köth as Rosina, and Max Proebstl as Bartolo. It features the Choir of the Bavarian State Opera and the Bavarian State Orchestra. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
