Test Pilots: Pushing the Envelope
Per its title, the documentary series Test Pilots discusses the lives, roles and accomplishments of the men and women in America who test-fly state-of-the-art aircraft, putting their safety on the line as they push the vehicles to undreamt-of extremes. The jargon in the title of this particular episode will be familiar to many from Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff; "pushing the envelope" (or "pushing the edge of the envelope") refers to forcing the vehicle to speeds historically undocumented by jet pilots, despite the exponential increase in risk that accompanies this. The program witnesses Steve Rainey undergoing this process via a battery of tests in an F-22 Fighter Jet. Alec Baldwin (The Shadow) narrates. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
