The planet Kibi is one of the few independent worlds left in the galaxy; most have been swallowed up by the tyrannical Kingdom, which treats each planet under its control like a jewel in its crown. When the Kingdom finally sics its forces on Kibi, the peaceful planet surrenders completely -- except for one ship. The Amaterasu was in transit during the invasion, and now its crew, which consists entirely of trainees, returns to find its home world defeated. The inexperienced crew isn't as willing as the rest of Kibi to go down without a fight, however, so it prepares for battle against the Kingdom. How will just one starship finance or wage such a war? With the backing of a major satellite TV station, of course! In exchange for what they need, the crew of the Amaterasu agrees to let the battle play out on TV screens as the hottest reality show yet.
