S.E. Hinton

S.E. Hinton

Author S.E. Hinton was born Susan Eloise Hinton, but published books under just her first initials, as editors thought readers would have a hard time accepting that a woman wrote such hard-hitting works as The Outsiders and Rumble Fish. Originally, the Oklahoma native took solace in writing when her father passed away, and she took inspiration from her own socially divided high school to write The Outsiders, which was subsequently made into a movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Hinton even took a cameo role in the film, playing a nurse. Coppola then directed an adaptation of Rumble Fish, and again Hinton joined the cast in a minor appearance as a hooker. The author also completed several more works including Hawkes Harbor and The Puppy Sister. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
