This film starts out a comedy and ends up a tragedy before it's over. A young man leaves his country home to seek his living in the big city. When he meets a friend, he gets a position working in the mansion of a wealthy landowner and his wife. Their beautiful daughter and the young man start an affair that is plagued by his bumbling and shyness. The landlord's wife is ignored by her husband, who spends his time participating in drunken orgies instead of staying home. The teetotaling wife agrees to take a nip to appease her husband, but she soon falls victim to demon alcohol. Her husband manages to change his drinking ways, but the insidious grip of booze has his helpless wife hooked. He straightens out his life as he watches her drink away the family fortune. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide
