Most Americans have either seen James McNeill Whistler's painting entitled "Arrangement in Grey and Black" or at least heard of it by its more common name, "Whistler's Mother." Though Whistler was born in America, he left the country at the age of 21, never to return. This video notes that he split most of his time abroad living in either Paris or London. The beauty and culture of those cities clearly fed his work. However, Whistler's art has never been labeled as precisely as that of many of his contemporaries, such as the Impressionists. Two of Whistler's best known works, "At the Piano" and "The White Girl," are thought to resemble the realism of Courbet's paintings. ~ Elizabeth Smith, All Movie Guide
