Remembering Jacqueline du Pré
During her all-too-brief career, Jacqueline duPre earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the finest cellists in the world, displaying a technical virtuosity and a keen understanding of the emotional and personal components of music. Jacqueline duPre began taking cello lessons at the age of six, made her professional debut at the age of 16, first performed in the United States at the age of 20, and performed as a guest soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras until 1972, when she contracted multiple sclerosis and found herself unable to play her instrument at age 27. She passed on in 1987. Remembering Jacqueline duPre is a documentary video which features performance footage of duPre at the height of her powers, performing Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, Offenbach's Duos for two cellos, and Brahms' Sonata No. 2 in F, Op. 99, among others, with a stellar cast of musical legends, including Zubin Mehta, Itzhak Perlman, and Pinchas Zuckerman. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
