Urdu filmmaker Sohrab Modi directs this big-budget historical drama set in the court of Mughal Emperor Jehangir's (Chandramohan) brutal regime. The film centers on a pair of star-crossed couples. The first romance is between Mangal Singh (Sadiq Ali) and Kanwar (Sheela), whose families are caught in a bloody feud, while the second is between the Emperor and his wife, Nurjehan. Soon after Mangal slays Kanwar's father and brother, Mangal discovers the couple together and turns them in. The Emperor sentences Mangal to death, claiming that no one, regardless of class, is above the law. His moral strength is tested when a lowly peasant accuses the Emperor's wife of murdering her husband during a hunting trip. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
