Faith Crowell (Meg Tilly) is a starving artist who is commissioned to paint a mural for socialite Frances Griffiin (Ellen Burstyn). The subject of the mural is to be Frances' daughter, Cassandra, who died accidentally on the night of her coming-out ball. As Faith works on the mural, she begins to receive expensive gifts from her client, and she gradually comes to notice uncanny similarities between herself and Cassandra.
