Communist leader Fidel Castro began ruling the island of Cuba as a Prime Minister in 1959, and subsequently held court well into the 21st century - a 55+ year period that witnessed not only Castro's popular election as president by the Cuban people (c. 1976) and his successful decision to reslate Cuba's role as a global force after the collapse of the Iron Curtain, but - on a darker note - over 600 assassination attempts on Castro's life, all of which he cunningly survived.
