Keka
Keka, a black comedy, marks the second feature of young Filipino filmmaker Quark Henares. Keka (Katya Santos) loses the love of her life to a violent fraternity ambush. She despairs of ever finding happiness again until, years later, she decides to ease her pain by killing off the frat boys, one by one. They escaped justice due to their parents' connections, and they have all gone on to successful careers, particularly the ringleader, Bobby (Ryan Eigenmann), who is a heartthrob soap actor. Keka calls on her boyfriend's old frat brother, Bhong (Vhong Navarro), who gets her a gun, mistakenly thinking she won't go through with her plan. Meanwhile, Jason (Wendell Ramos), the cop assigned to the murder investigation, finds himself falling for Keka, unaware that she's his number one suspect. As the bodies pile up, Keka is torn between her love for the straight-laced cop and the growing sense of satisfaction she gets from killing those who destroyed her life. Eventually, both Bobby and Jason realize that the killings are connected and immediately begin to suspect Bhong. Despite the occasional mayhem, Henares presents everything in a lighthearted manner, even including a song-and-dance number for all the men in Keka's life. Both Santos and Ramos are well known in the Philippines for their softcore film careers, but Henares, who makes a cameo in the film as the soap opera director, makes a point of avoiding nudity in Keka. The film was shown at the 2004 New York Asian American International Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
