Joseph Schmidt: Star Fell From Heaven
Famed opera singer Joseph Schmidt stars in this comedy with music as a voice student who is hired by a low-budget film studio to be the voice double for one of their stars, whose instrument isn't making the grade in his vocal turns for an upcoming musical. The singer's work helps to make the movie a hit, but he finds he's not only not getting the proper credit for his work, his girlfriend is stolen away by the frog-voiced actor. Sadly, A Star Fell From Heaven proved to be the last feature film for Schmidt; the Jewish vocalist fled his native Germany and traveled through much of Europe in an effort to escape the Nazi occupation, only to end up in a Swiss internment camp, where he died in 1942. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
