Leos Janacek's well-known opera Jenufa is the story of the maiden Jenufa. The pregnant Jenufa is not allowed to marry Steva until he stops drinking, but when Steva finds out about the baby, he refuses to marry her anyway. Kostelnicka, Jenufa's step-mother, tries to arrange a marriage with Steva's brother, Laca, and, in so doing, tells Laca that the baby is dead. She drowns the infant while Jenufa is sleeping. The opera is sung in Czech. The London Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Andrew Davis, and features the Glydebourne Chorus. ~ Alice Day, All Movie Guide
