Inside the Circle
While most people think of hip hop dancing as a New York phenomenon, as rap music has spread the hip hop message all over the world, "b-boy" dance crews can be found in every part of the United States. In Austin, Texas, dancer Romeo Navarro has been organizing street dancing competitions for over a decade, and dozens of talented young men can be found vying for respect in the dancer's circle on a regular basis. Inside The Circle is a documentary that looks at the hip-hop dance movement in Austin, and two of the scene's best dancers, Omar Davila and Josh Ayers. Both are talented, but Omar seems to better embody Romeo's philosophy that "If you can hold yourself down in battle, you can hold yourself down in life," and looks to be well on his way to making dancing a career. Josh, on the other hand, has had a few serious scrapes with the law, and it seems to be anyone's guess if he's headed for stardom or prison. Inside The Circle received its world premiere at the 2007 South by Southwest Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
