This program is part of the popular series from the History Channel that investigates some of civilization's unsolved mysteries and controversies. This episode travels back to Roman times to investigate what it meant to be a Roman gladiator. It was not a pretty picture and the stakes were high: ignominious death or a chance for fame and fortune. Forced to fight for sport or die, the gladiators were those already facing death as prisoners and former slaves. The documentary shows how there was little to lose, and sometimes much to gain.
