El Abandonado
Director Kenneth O. Jonson takes the helm for this unflinching meditation on religion, grief, faith, and healing concerning a devout catholic who rails against the cross after losing everything he ever cared for. Jose was a deeply religious man, until he lost his wife and two children in a devastating car accident, that is. Now left alone in the world with no one to care for and no one to comfort him, Jose places the blame for his loss squarely on the shoulders of God. When no amount of soul searching or support from the church proves capable of placating Jose's growing anger, the enraged widower embarks on a sacrilegious rampage in which no symbol of the almighty is left unblemished. Later happening across a benevolent nun who promises to help him, Jose kidnaps the clergywoman and spirals ever further into his bottomless pit of despair. Just then, a warming ray of light cuts through the darkness, promising a brighter future despite the pain that still grips Jose. Tenuously accepting the light as a sign from above, the tormented widower vows to pick himself up and move out of the darkness before it swallows him whole. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
