Denise Austin: Mat Workout Based on the Work of J.H. Pilates
Long popular among professional dancers, the Pilates exercise method is now currying favor with models, actors, and others seeking a lean, strong, flexible physique without muscular bulk. Developed in the 1920's, Joseph Pilates' program features precise, non-repetitive toning movements that require intense concentration -- an effective trick to keep students motivated, interested, and challenged, both mentally and physically. For this 2000 video, energetic instructor Denise Austin has developed two of her own toning workouts based on Pilates methods. The first 20-minute floor session focuses on Pilates basics -- "the hundred," roll-ups, leg circles, and the spine stretch forward. The second combines Pilates with yoga, featuring 22 minutes of standing and floor poses. Though designated Intermediate, Austin's clear and easy-to-follow instruction makes this tape appropriate for beginners who are up for a challenge; no equipment required. ~ Sarah Welsh, All Movie Guide
