Benjamin Britten's final opera was this adaptation of Thomas Mann's short story about Aschenbach, a German author who arrives in Italy in the midst of an epidemic and finds himself falling hopelessly in love with a beautiful but unattainable young man. This production of Death in Venice stars Robert Tear as the doomed Aschenbach, as well as Alan Opie and Michael Chance; Graeme Jenkins conducts the London Sinfonetta, as Steven Lawless and Martha Clarke direct the production. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
