Cosi Fan Tutte (Teatro Argentina)
Paolo Ponziano Ciardi conducts this performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 1790 opera Cosi fan Tutte, with musical accompaniment by the Rome Philharmonic Orchestra. Originally written at the behest of Emperor Joseph II of Austria, the work - a bawdy dramma giocoso with a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte - concerns a wager between the libidinous husbands Officer Fernando and Officer Guglielmo that each of their intendeds will remain faithful; they then attempt to engage in 'fiancée-swapping' by disguising themselves as foreign visitors and each taking advantage of the other's paramour. Mozart injected the work with elements of The Decameron, Shakespeare's Cymbeline and the myth of Procris. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
