During his all-too-brief career (he died a tragic death at the age of 45), French-born tango superstar Carlos Gardel nevertheless rocketed to fame around the world, culling a particularly large fanbase in Argentina. Gardel earned tremendous historical significance as well, as the very first singer/instrumentalist to establish the tango as a pop form.
