Artists of the 20th Century: Marcel Duchamp
An artist whose work embraced the influences of dada and surrealism while revealing an influential and expressive perspective all his own, Marcel Duchamp burst into public recognition in 1913 with his famous painting Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2, which caused a sensation at the fabled New York Armory Show of that year. After crafting his masterwork, The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors Even, a large box containing a series of drawings, prints and notes, Duchamp moved on to sculpture, and stunned the art world with his "Ready Mades" series, a collection of common household objects to which he affixed his signature, turning them into objects d'art decades before Andy Warhol became famous for the same trick. Artists of the 20th Century: Marcel Duchamp is a documentary which explores the short but vital career of this trailblazing artist, his decision to leave visual art behind in favor of chess, and the lasting influence of his work and his philosophies. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
