The adaptation of Vita Sackville-West's novel stars Wendy Hiller as Lady Slane, an elderly woman whose husband dies. Her children orchestrate how the rest of her life will be lived, but she takes control of her own future much to their consternation. She develops new friends, and considers the possibility of a new love.
