Alice doesn't fall through the looking-glass in this unusual social comedy, but she might as well have. She is a bureaucrat who has come to the small town of Maravillas (Wonders) on a routine cultural mission. She discovers that the name is no mistake when she opens her bathroom mirror to find a man shaving on the other side of it. Then, in the middle of the night, she experiences an unheard-of swarm of cockroaches. The next day, the streets are as much populated by circus animals as by people. Eventually, she finds out that much of the population of this town is composed of recently fired bureaucrats who have arrived in this strange place but can't find a way back from it. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
