Namco's hand-to-hand fighting game series returns to PlayStation Portable with enhanced graphics, destructible environments, online features, and the series' largest character roster to date. The "King of Iron Fist Tournament" brings 40 contenders into the fray this time around, with mainstays such as Jin, King, Anna, Law, Phoenix, and Heihachi, as well as six newcomers, including the jet-pack enabled Alisa Bosconovitch, the veteran warrior Lars Alexandersson, and the obese but impossibly quick American karate champion known as Bob. The series' fan-familiar match types and battle modes are included, although some have been revamped. In the storyline-driven "Scenario Campaign" mode, similar to the "Tekken Force" mode featured in earlier editions of the game, a chosen character battles through set piece areas, fighting numerous enemies to progress. Online functionality is fundamental in Tekken 6. Players can join matches against others over an Internet connection, or fight alongside a human-controlled ally in a co-op mode. Character appearances can be customized, with selections of clothing, hairstyles, fashion accessories, and tattoos, for a memorable look in online battles. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide

Gamers once again don the hooded cloak and hidden daggers of Altaïr for more Crusades-era assassinations and open-world acrobatics in Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines. Altaïr retains all of his weapons and skills from the original game, and PS3 compatibility means that players who collect special Templar coins in Bloodlines and Assassin's Creed II can unlock and share new abilities across platforms. There are nine different mission types, including tailing, interrogation, and treasure hunts, and the action takes place in two sprawling cities, with gamers once again scaling the tallest monuments and towers in order to locate their next target. The Animus system returns, with seven different "memory blocks" serving as the game's levels, but Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines eschews the futuristic sojourns, protracted missions, and expositional death conversations of the original game in favor of shorter, more direct action aimed at on-the-go portable gamers. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
- Platform:
- PSP
- Release Date:
- 2009
- Rated:

Honor among thieves is a concept known in any culture, and no criminal organization can last without deep, unquestioning trust among its members. In Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, players discover a betrayal of that trust: corruption that runs to the core of a Triad crime syndicate. Most of the action in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is viewed from an angled, top-down perspective on the city streets, more similar to the pre-GTA3 games in the series. Originally developed for the DS, the PSP version of Chinatown Wars features spruced-up graphics and an original soundtrack, and the former's stylus-based controls have been replaced by more traditional analog maneuvering. The driving sequences and mini-games remain however, once again representing iniquitous activities such as hotwiring cars, dealing drugs, and digging through debris for stashed goods. Fans will find the same open world, emergent adventure, violent action, pop-culture riffing, and dark humor that make the Grand Theft Auto series the most glorified and notorious of its time. What they won't find is a rehash of previous adventures with the likes of Tommy Vercetti or Niko Bellic. Forget it. It's Chinatown. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide

Half-Minute Hero

- PSP
- Release Date:
- 2009

Featuring four separate game modes and visuals designed as a loving homage to classic 8-bit titles, Half-Minute Hero finds gamers saving the world from evil in 30-second intervals. Each of the four game modes is split into 30 levels, and each offers a different style of gameplay. In the RPG-like "Hero 30," players attempt to defeat evil lords by engaging in random battles (featuring completely automated combat), leveling up, earning loot, and stopping by small towns to recover health and purchase items. "Evil Lord 30" is a simple real-time strategy mode where gamers can summon three different kinds of monsters to dispatch a variety of monsters in each location.
"Princess 30" is a side-scrolling shooter in which a young royal and her squadron of protective knights fire arrows in all directions as they attempt to capture helpful items, and "Knight 30" is made up of a series of escort missions where players try to protect a mage from relentless monster attacks. The catch in every one of the game modes is that players have only 30 seconds to complete each task before the world ends. Fortunately for gamers, the apocalypse can be averted thanks to the venal nature of the Time Goddess, who will gladly turn back the clock for a small fee. Half-Minute Hero also features a multiplayer mode, letting up to four gamers compete in local Ad-hoc competitions. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide
