Dead to Rights
- Platform:
- PlayStation 2
- Release Date:
- 2002
- Rated:

In the tradition of Max Payne and Syphon Filter comes Dead to Rights, a story-driven third-person shooter divided into chapters rather than levels. Playing the role of Jack Slate, a man wrongly accused of murder, players will advance through a variety of gritty urban locales on a bloody path to discover those who framed him. A number of hostile people will try to prevent this from happening, so Slate will need to dole out punishment using a combination of fisticuffs and cold, hard steel.
Dead to Rights borrows a number of concepts popularized by Hong Kong cinema. Players can fire two guns at once, independently of one another, as well as perform slow-motion dives to avoid bullets and attack at the same time (similar to the ShootDodge feature in Max Payne). In addition, players can overtake enemies and use their bodies as shields, back up against walls, pivot, and return fire, as well as snap the necks of unsuspecting foes to steal their weapons.
While the action is played from a third-person perspective, Slate can switch to a first-person viewpoint at any time to target specific areas, such as headshots or other vulnerable body parts. Enemies react differently depending on where they are hit, so a shot in the leg may not be enough to stop them from attacking. As players progress through the game, they will engage in a number of boss fights to test their skills using Slate's assortment of moves and weapons. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter
- Platform:
- Xbox
- Release Date:
- 2003
- Rated:

Blending ground-based shooting with outer space combat, Bounty Hunter is a sci-fi adventure starring an ex-soldier named Mace Griffin. After being framed and imprisoned for the murder of his brothers-in-arms, Griffin returns to society as a bounty hunter who has vowed to track down those responsible. As he explores the far reaches of space searching for information, Griffin will make contact with an assortment of human and alien characters, both friend and foe.
Bounty Hunter's hybrid gameplay offers a series of 13 missions to further the story as well as add to the main character's notoriety and personal wealth. Cash received from successful missions can be used to upgrade firearms and ship weapons at specific shops. While the majority of action is played from a first-person viewpoint on the ground, the act of traveling to and from destinations is accomplished via spaceship. Hostile encounters with creatures in space may also affect relations with that particular race on the surface.
As the main character gains renown across the galaxy, players will be able to unravel more of the story and embark on specific missions designed to further the main plot. To help immerse players into the game, U.K. developer Warthog designed a special engine (TUSK) that allows for complete movement in and out of the spaceship without the use of cut-scenes or transition sequences. In-game environments include space stations, battle cruisers, and various planetary surfaces as players move one step closer to solving the conspiracy. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

Blood Wake
- Platform:
- Xbox
- Release Date:
- 2002
- Rated:

Blood Wake is a ship combat title taking place across an assortment of rivers, bays, straights, and oceans in a fictional setting inspired by ancient China. As a gifted young lieutenant named Shao Kai, who finds himself rescued at sea by the Shadow Clan after a savage attack, players begin a 28-level quest for vengeance against both the Jade Kingdom and mighty Iron Empire. Each level features an objective, from protecting a group of ships against marauding pirates to all-out assaults on enemy fortresses.
As players progress through the Story Mode, more and more boats will become available, each outfitted with specific weapon payloads and differing in size and power. A total of 14 boats, two of which are hidden, are divided into the following five classes: Speedboat, Catamaran, Gunboat, Devil Boat, and Hydroplane. Each vessel is equipped with two to four primary and up to seven secondary weapons. Primary weapons offer unlimited ammo, while secondary weapons are more powerful but are limited in number.
Depending on the vessel, a player's main attack consists of either chain guns or auto-cannons. Secondary weapons are also based on ship type, and may include torpedoes, rocket launchers, mines, stingers, and a wave gun. A circular radar in the top left corner of the screen delineates friendly and enemy vessels as well as land targets. Turbo, secondary weapon ammo, and armor levels are depicted in the screen's upper right corner. Players can replenish both secondary weapons and armor by collecting floating crates left behind by defeated vessels.
In addition to the single-player Story Mode, Blood Wake features a Battle Mode supporting up to four players via split-screen. Survivor, Free for All, and Team Deathmatch games have players either racking up as many kills as possible within a time limit or trying to reach a specified kill count. Domination is a King of the Hill variant, which involves maintaining control over a region until the time limit is reached. Each game can be played against up to three human or computer opponents. Blood Wake also supports codes, one of which unlocks a soccer-style multiplayer game of Blood Ball. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

Max Payne
- Platform:
- PlayStation 2
- Release Date:
- 2001
- Rated:

Over four years in the making, the highly anticipated Max Payne adds a new aspect of stylistic storytelling to the action-based 3D shooter. The game was developed solely as a single-player adventure and the designers at Finland's Remedy Entertainment focused on creating an experience that would make players care at least as much about the main character as they would about finish times or frag counts. Tried and true devices of pulp fiction and film noir are employed in this computer game, drawing the player into the dark story through gripping motivations of revenge and self-preservation.
Technically, Max Payne offers its own brand of state-of-the-art graphics and sound. Detailed, high-resolution environments are deformable, as walls become riddled with bullet holes of various sizes and shreds of paper, plastic, plaster, and tile fall to the ground, each in their own distinctly realistic manners. Admittedly inspired by the cinematic works of John Woo and Sam Peckinpah, the game applies stylistic techniques borrowed from action films as well, not only to add to the mood of the story but also to enhance gameplay. The title's signature "bullet time" gunfights can be played out in slow motion to provide a familiar dramatic effect and also to allow the player a chance to better situate himself and pick out prime targets in the chaos of flying lead.
While the storyline still determines the events that need to happen in each mission and level, the Max Payne is designed to allow the player to decide exactly how goals are accomplished. While the game must adhere to the linear nature of a plot-driven experience, it strives to also allow an engaging sense of freedom and control through expansive level design. Large, seamless areas are intended to offer the player a sense of new space to conquer as he sees fit, whether methodically sneaking about to avoid detection or running quickly and violently through a swarm of enemies with both guns blazing. ~ T.J. Brute Force
- Platform:
- Xbox
- Release Date:
- 2003
- Rated:

Brute Force is a squad-based shooter starring four cloned soldiers who fight on behalf of a 23rd century military organization known as the Confederation. Players begin the operation as Tex, a skilled mercenary who shoots first and asks questions later, but will reunite with other members of the team as the game progresses, including feral alien Brutus, the beautiful scout Hawk, and a synthetic female named Flint. Campaign mode, which can be played solo or cooperatively with up to three friends, consists of 18 missions taking place on six planet surfaces. Players will seek out hostile aliens and mutants from volcanic and desert wastelands to lush jungles and ancient ruins.
Each warrior can pick up and use two types of weapons at any given time as well as carry a limited number of grenades. Characters also have one special skill that can be activated for a limited duration of time. Tex can wield both weapons at once in a berserker state; Brutus can pick up heat traces to see enemies or sense traps in otherwise poor conditions; Hawk can camouflage herself to become invisible to others; and Flint automatically isolates enemy targets from afar so she can pick them off with her sniper rifle. Missions are composed of both primary and secondary objectives, which earn players money used to purchase additional cloned soldiers whenever teammates are lost during an expedition.
Brute Force also features two separate multiplayer games. In addition to co-op play in Campaign mode, players can set up Deathmatch or Squad Deathmatch scenarios where up to four players (up to eight using an Xbox System Link Cable) can select different teams to battle each other on a choice of maps and victory conditions. Although the game does not offer online competition, Xbox Live is supported for downloadable content, including new multiplayer maps and single-player missions. Players can also unlock additional characters for use in multiplayer games by finding DNA canisters hidden somewhere within Campaign missions. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
- Platform:
- PlayStation 2
- Release Date:
- 2002
- Rated:

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin picks up where the original PC adventure left off, with Agent 47 having grown accustomed to the somewhat peaceful existence he now endures at a Sicilian monastery. This idyllic lifestyle is cut abruptly short when a priest is kidnapped by a group of rather unsavory characters. Players, as Agent 47, must once again take up arms and hunt down those responsible for this heinous act. Things, as tends to be the case, aren't quite as simple as they first appear, however, and players will find themselves traveling the globe as they participate in 20 objective-based missions. As the title implies, the gameplay in this third-person actioner revolves around the methodical and quiet removal of whoever happens to be your current target. Missions are preceded by briefings from an Agency contact. These outline the objectives you must complete, while highlighting the level and type of resistance you're likely to encounter along the way.
How you go about completing the tasks laid out before you, is left to the player. Excessive force can be used, silently killing any resistance you encounter, or more subversive tactics, such as disguising yourself as an inconspicuous delivery boy or fireman will allow you to move about the environments relatively unhindered. When disguised, however, suspicious behavior (indicated by an onscreen suspicion meter), such as carrying a firearm while in disguise or running, can blow your cover and see you beset by numerous bodyguards, police or whomever the opposition happens to be at that time. Those wishing to embark on a mission with a small cache of weapons can do just that; weapons accrued during each mission persist throughout the game and can be equipped prior to the commencement of any particular mission. Players can arm themselves with pistols, shotguns, automatic weapons, rifles as well as melee weapons, such as a knife or fiber wire for particularly stealthy kills. Gadgets such as night-vision goggles and remote bombs can also be used in limited quantities.
Agent 47 is capable of performing a number of maneuvers, including picking locks and dragging bodies out of plain sight. A simple button press will allow Agent 47 to sneak, quietly but very slowly through areas, while a first-person mode allows for more precise aiming when the situation calls for it. Also, to ensure that players are aware of their surroundings at all times, the camera can be manipulated with the right-analog stick. At the conclusion of each mission players are awarded a rating affected by various factors, including innocents killed, alarms triggered, kills achieved, and so forth. ~ Gavin Frankle, All Game Guide

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 continues the squad-based shooter series with 15 new single-player missions, nine multiplayer maps, and over 30 weapons. Instead of porting the PC's Raven Shield, Ubi Soft opted to create an original release designed specifically for consoles. Players control Team RAINBOW's Ding Chavez throughout the entire solo campaign, commanding fellow agents Louis Loiselle, Dieter Weber, and Eddie Price. The GameCube's Rainbow Six 3 does away with the planning phase found in the PC version of the game, but the 3D engine still uses Epic Games Inc.'s Unreal technology for dynamic lighting effects and "soft body" physics. All levels in the single-player campaign can be played cooperatively with a friend in split-screen mode. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide

Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain
- Platform:
- PlayStation 2
- Release Date:
- 2004
- Rated:

Sony's Syphon Filter series of counter-terrorist action games continues on PlayStation 2 with an outbreak of the Omega Strain. Instead of guiding Gabe Logan, the star of the previous two titles, players create their own agent from scratch in order to stop a new strain of the original's deadly virus from seeping its way across the globe. Nearly every facet of characters can be customized, from their physical appearance to the uniform and equipment used to carry out the various objectives required of them. A total of 17 free-roaming levels are set in locales ranging from Toronto and Belarus to Brazil and Uganda, each offering multiple ways to complete missions and spanning more than three times the size of previous levels in the Syphon Filter universe.
More than 100 different weapons and gadgets are available to neutralize the terrorist threat, including the ability to fire two pistols at once, though only four can be carried at one time. New equipment becomes accessible as players earn experience during the game, with a military ranking assigned to characters allowing them to acquire additional techniques or proficiency in various skills. As in previous games, the action takes place from a third-person perspective set behind the agent, allowing players to crouch, kneel, run, throw, and jump -- all while targets are locked into sight. New to the series is the ability to isolate specific body parts, such as a leg or arm, to quickly immobilize threats without necessarily killing them.
Syphon Filter: Omega Strain also features online multiplayer support for the first time. Up to four players can embark on missions cooperatively in each of the game's 17 solo missions, which contain exclusive new areas for multiplayer action in the form of special time-based scenarios. The game additionally supports USB-compatible headsets to communicate with other agents, offering squad-based strategy options during the game as well as simplifying the process of issuing commands. To help players navigate the different 3D environments, situational updates will occur during the course of a mission and a transparent map is designed to show the whereabouts of each member in the squad. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs [No Headset]
- Platform:
- PlayStation 2
- Release Date:
- 2003
- Rated:

The dangerous life of an elite Navy SEAL commander is the subject of this squad-based shooter, the first PlayStation 2 game requiring a broadband connection to play online. Single players will lead their four-man team on a series of 12 missions, ranging from ambushes to hostage rescue attempts, as they engage terrorists throughout such real-world locales as Thailand, Congo, and Turkmenistan. The game was developed in conjunction with Naval Special Warfare Command to breathe some accuracy into the objectives and tactical maneuvers players experience while advancing through the campaign.
The four SEALS comprising the team work together in two pairs: Able Element and Bravo Element. The advantage to this scheme is that Bravo Element can be sent to different waypoints on the tactical map, viewable at any time during play, to complete certain objectives or to rendezvous at key locations. Each player's partner must remain close to provide cover and backup when needed, so teams cannot split completely apart. Commands are relayed in a unified system of "who, what, and where," with abbreviations and call signs substituted for complete names.
Each mission begins with a briefing and a series of objectives, such as securing a building or neutralizing a sentry. The tactical map outlines structures, coordinates, and routes to take during the mission, and a choice of weapons, 30 types ranging from guns to explosive devices, can be equipped before hitting the ground. The attempt at realism is reflected in the manner in which players conduct themselves. Bodies of fallen comrades can be hidden to avoid detection, opponents can be silently taken out using a rifle butt or knife, and shadows can be used to conceal the player from a terrorist's keen eye.
Once players have grown accustomed to the single-player game, they can challenge up to 15 opponents on one, two, or three maps. Game types include "Demolition," which is akin to capture the flag with bombs; "Suppression," a deathmatch between terrorists and SEALs; and "Extraction," where SEALS attempt to rescue hostages from terrorists. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

kill.switch is a third-person shooter that takes place amidst war-torn Middle Eastern cities, underground submarine bases, and other places. Cast in the role of an elite commando, players must carefully take out enemy snipers and guards while seeking cover behind walls, barriers, or other objects found within the environment. While the character ducks behind an object or presses against a wall, players can perform a technique called blindfire, which involves spraying bullets toward the general direction of an enemy without directly aiming at a target. The benefit to this procedure is the character will avoid damage from counter fire, since he remains out of sight behind an obstacle while firing the weapon. Players must carefully plan their attacks in order to beat the overwhelming odds stacked against their success. Enemies will work together in teams to flush out players from their hiding spots and coordinate attacks, making each encounter a potentially deadly one. kill.switch's tour of duty is composed of six missions spanning 18 distinct levels. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

Hitman: Contracts
- Platform:
- PlayStation 2
- Release Date:
- 2004
- Rated:

Resume the role of cold contract killer Agent 47 and arm yourself for new missions of meticulous planning and expert execution. Following the breakthrough success of the PC original Codename 47 and the mainstream popularity of its cross-platform sequel Silent Assassin, this third title in the Hitman series is designed to refine the stealth-action control scheme and revamp the graphical presentation, while maintaining the tradition of dark, morally ambivalent storytelling that has shown the efficient, mysterious protagonist to be much more than a mindless trigger-jockey.
As in the earlier games, a large part of the Hitman's work is in gaining the needed understanding about his target and surroundings. While a job may be finished with a single, split-second shot, a great deal of preparation often must come first. Proper surveillance can be invaluable, as understanding the movements and routines of each target means understanding the opportunities and risks of each job. Players will choose from an assortment of possible weapons, each appropriate for different situations. This third tale begins in Paris, where Agent 47 finds himself alone, trapped, and wounded. As usual, steel-nerved skill may be all that saves the silent assassin from his own swift execution. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide

Unreal II: The Awakening
- Platform:
- Xbox
- Release Date:
- 2004
- Rated:

Unreal II: The Awakening offers gamers a new story that takes place in the universe introduced in the hugely successful original Unreal. Though the multiplayer-based Unreal Tournament enhanced the original game with fast action and customizable multiplayer gameplay, Unreal II is a full-fledged sequel to the popular 1998 first-person shooter, complete with diverse new single-player missions and a storyline that ties them all together. While the original Unreal put the player in the role of a convicted criminal, gamers play the part of a law enforcement agent in this story.
As a Terran Colonial Authority Frontier Marshal in charge of the aging Atlantis starship, the player represents the very long arm of the law as the only enforcement officer in a distant sector of space. Patrols seem routine and uneventful, until war breaks out unexpectedly in the area and the ship and its crew suddenly find themselves in the middle of a violent and dangerous conflict. While the player's first responsibility must be the protection of the frontier citizens in the area, determining the cause of this sudden war could make that job a lot easier.
Missions take place in ten different environments, with settings that range from a jungle planet thick with strange vegetation and dangerous creatures to an arid desert world spotted with the ancient ruins of forgotten civilizations. Missions vary from tactical hostage rescues and organized base defense to more conventional one-person search-and-destroy operations. The game is designed so that the storytelling elements will not interfere with the player's immersion in the game world. Before each assignment, the player is briefed aboard the orbiting Atlantis. When objectives are completed, the player returns to the ship and the story advances based on new developments. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide

Killzone
- Platform:
- PlayStation 2
- Release Date:
- 2004
- Rated:

Inspired by the courage demonstrated and devastation sustained in the warfare of the 20th century, Killzone makes its debut as a PS2 exclusive, bringing with it an assortment of features. The game offers four playable characters and 27 different weapons. Players will engage the enemy in more than 11 detailed environments, designed to showcase the grueling settings of a war-ridden planet. There are several gameplay modes to chose from, including single-player and multiplayer (team-based and competitive), as well as online play for up to 12 players.
Killzone immerses players in a future of space colonization that has resulted in several planets becoming inhabited by humans. While most of the colonies united to form the ISA, a ruthless, militaristic faction known as the Helghast has secretly separated itself, and is preparing to wage all-out war. On a nearby colony known as Vecta, the city's orbital defense mysteriously goes offline, allowing the Helghast to land and deploy their troops. As a member of an elite ISA military force, the player's objective is to escort a high-ranking official to an evacuation point while avoiding an intelligent computer-controlled enemy, able to calculate threats, maintain military direction, and execute self-preservation tactics. ~ Damian Francis, All Game Guide

GoldenEye: Rogue Agent
- Platform:
- PlayStation 2
- Release Date:
- 2004
- Rated:

Invoking the name of Rare's 1997 first-person shooter for N64 -- easily its most highly acclaimed James Bond game predecessor -- 2004's GoldenEye: Rogue Agent is an original super spy adventure experienced from a different point of view. Developed by Electronic Art's Los Angeles studios, the game has players taking the role of an MI6 agent working toward elite "00" license-to-kill status, who is dismissed for "reckless brutality." Seizing the opportunity to bring such a highly skilled and well-trained operative into his own organization, infamous Bond supervillian Auric Goldfinger welcomes the player's disenfranchised agent into his ranks.
Like its N64 forebear, the 128-bit version of GoldenEye is a first-person shooter with lots of opportunity for multiplayer action. Standard deathmatches and domination games are supported, as well as a "Tug of War" game that has teams competing to move a bomb across the map by flipping a series of switches. Four-player split-screen play is offered, and properly equipped PlayStation 2 and Xbox gamers can go online to find competitive multiplayer games for up to eight. Also like the original, Rogue Agent features a full single-player campaign as well.
Though playing as the "bad guy" in GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, gamers may find that their opponents are often other evil minions from rival underworld operations. As the game begins, Goldfinger is in a struggle with the nefarious Dr. No for control of the world's most powerful criminal organization. The game is officially licensed by MGM (which holds the rights to the franchise), so players can expect to meet other famous (and infamous) characters from the James Bond universe, such as Oddjob, Pussy Galore, Scaramanga, and Xenia Onatopp, as they make their way through this adventure. ~ T.J. Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
- Platform:
- PlayStation 2
- Release Date:
- 2005
- Rated:

Adventuresome gamers aim to eliminate a maniacal dictator -- for the good of humanity, as well as significant monetary compensation from the highest bidder. As its title suggests, Mercenaries puts players in the roles of soldiers for hire, who find ample opportunities for employment as an unexpected menace leads the nations of the world to the brink of disaster. In a quick and bloody coup, the prime minister of North Korea has been displaced by a power-hungry general called Sung, who now threatens the world with nuclear attack. In the role of an American, British, or Swedish soldier of fortune, players choose their patron and price, and then go to work at eliminating the 52 most wanted perpetrators of the new North Korean regime. Each target is assigned a different playing card, for easy reference.
Naturally, the threat of nuclear attack draws considerable international interest, and players may choose employment by such diverse entities as the United Nations, the U.S. Coalition, China, or the Russian Mafia, as they work to collect the 52 bounties which will complete the deck. While the employer may set the basic mission objectives, mercenaries decide for themselves how to get the job done once they're on location. The game features over 30 weapons and more than 20 different vehicles, including cars and trucks, planes, helicopters, and tanks, allowing players to reach their goals using the tactics and equipment of their choosing. Mercenaries' storyline features multiple possible endings, and the game's conclusion will depend on moral decisions made by the player's character throughout the various missions.
With the phenomenal success of Rockstar's 128-bit generation Grand Theft Auto games, the notion of "emergent gameplay" created a buzz among some game developers and journalists. The general idea is to present an open-ended world that reacts naturally and appropriately, no matter what players try to do or when they try to do it. The gameplay "emerges" from the game world itself. This style is prominent in contemporary games such as Jak II and Beyond Good & Evil, and according to the publisher, it's fundamental in the design of Mercenaries as well. Player characters are set loose in large "sandbox" levels, where they must choose how they'll accomplish goals in terms of the game world's overall dynamic, instead of by following a scripted series of events. ~ T.J.
