In 1942, Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer and the United States Office of War Information collaborated on Bataan with the official goal to increase public understanding of World War II. The first war film to take place entirely on the battlefield -- with no scenes of the soldiers on leave, depictions of the home front, or flashbacks to pre-war civilian life -- Bataan prepared its wartime audience for American casualties. Its Alamo-esque storyline emphasized the value of such sacrifice and its diverse group of soldiers --compiled of all ranks, races, classes, ages, and creeds -- portrayed this effort as the duty of all men. It is a depiction of altruism and national unity that both inspired public support of the War and served as the template for World War II films throughout the forties and into the present. ~ Aubry Anne D'Arminio, All Movie Guide

Based on the best-selling novel by Sebastian Faulks, this drama, set in Europe during World War II, stars Cate Blanchett as Charlotte, a Scottish woman living in London. A mischievous girl accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit, only to find that her words have irrevocably and permanently changed the lives of all involved in a film that re-teams the filmmakers behind Pride & Prejudice to adapt the best-selling 2002 novel by author Ian McEwan. The year is 1935, and as the summer heat takes hold, 13-year-old fledgling writer Briony Tallis watches her older sister, Cecilia (Keira Knightley), get undressed and go frolicking in the garden fountain on her family's country estate. The housekeeper's son, Robbie (James McAvoy), a childhood friend and recent Cambridge graduate, also witnesses the innocent act. When Robbie and Cecilia subsequently cross a particularly sensitive boundary and the scheming Briony accuses Robbie of an unspeakable transgression for which the boy is wholly innocent, the repercussions of her unfounded claim threaten to affect all three for decades to come. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The forgotten stories and selfless sacrifices made by the American men and women who valiantly served in the Great War come together to offer a lasting reminder of our brave heritage in this documentary from filmmaker Mark Bussler. In addition to such literary icons as e.e. cummings and Ernest Hemingway, who transformed the horrors of war into treasured literary classics, director Bussler pays special attention to the African-American soldiers and female volunteers whose efforts broke considerable new ground in the realms of racial and social equality and helped to shape the 21st century. These are the stories of soldiers whose survival against immeasurable odds would provide just the inspiration their fellow soldiers needed to continue the battle, and of the pilots, ambulance drivers, and medical workers who risked it all to ensure the safety of their wartime brethren. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

- David Carradine
