I must have been 14 or 15 when I first saw the movie. Frankly I remembered it as one of the all-time greats and it did sweep the majority of the categories of Academy Awards. As a young teenager I was impressed; above all, "the good guys won"! They blew up the bridge - that was "cool"! But seeing the film again now, I must re-assess. The acting, cinematography, etc. were great, but the premise of the story and the lack of character of the leading characters were too extreme; unbelievable and actually disgracing to any real officers. As a number of realists have noted, if any colonel collaborated with the enemy like Nicholson did, his "regular grunts" would have quietly eliminated him early on.
