An unfulfilled teacher and a failed actor form a tenuous bond after being set up on a date by a mutual friend in this lighthearted romance from director Martin Walz. Anna is an elementary school teacher who feels as if her life has devolved into a constant stream of disappointments, and Thilo is a thirty-something actor who sells wine by phone and still longs for his big breakthrough. Lately, Anna's old friend Valerie and her husband Moritz have noticed that their Anna seems especially down. In hopes of brightening her spirits a bit, the couple sets Anna up with Moritz's best friend Thilo. When Anna and Thilo finally meet face-to-face, however, it just seems that the timing is all wrong; Anna can't stop talking about her love for teaching and learning, and Thilo is stuck on the subject of being an actor. Yet despite the awkward nature of their first encounter, Anna and Thilo both sense that a strange bond has been created. When a screeching streetcar blasts by outside, Anna is reminded of the school-bell and jolts up from her seat. A brief kiss for Thilo and Anna out the door, marking the beginning of a curious relationship that may prove more lasting than either party ever suspected. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Safe sex just got a lot more dangerous in this purposefully outrageous comedy from Germany. A college professor, Mr. Smirnoff (Ralf Wolter) lures an attractive female student, who is willing to do just about anything to improve her grade, to New York's Hotel Quickie, where he avails himself of one of the free condoms provided by the management. However, the prophylactic in question has sprouted teeth and has a taste for blood, and before long, the prof is suddenly missing a penis. Assigned to investigate this strange case is detective Luigi Mackeroni (Udo Samel), a gay policeman who just transferred from Sicily and is a little lonely in his new home. When Luigi and Billy (Marc Richter), a good looking hustler, decide to repair to the Hotel Quickie for some fun and games, the detective himself is attacked by the carnivorous rubber (though his injuries are considerably less than those suffered by Prof. Smirnoff). Now much better acquainted with his new nemesis, Luigi has to convince his partner about the menace of the killer condoms, while in his spare time, he tries to brush off the uninvited advances of burly transvestite Babette (Leonard Lansink). Kondom des Grauens, released in the United States by Troma as Killer Condom, was based on a comic book by German cartoonist Ralf Koenig, who also wrote the screenplay. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Based on fact, The Boat is Full is set during World War II. A group of Jewish refugees desperately attempt to escape to the safety of neutral Switzerland. The problem: too many refugees, and too little room in the boat commissioned for the trip. Director Markus Imhoof is neither a polished nor a subtle filmmaker, nor is the acting of the highest calibre. This hardly matters: the intensity and sincerity of everyone involved in The Boat is Full compensates for any and all production crudities. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
