I think this is a very suspenseful movie and also a just plain scary movie. I saw the first hour and the end. Stephen King made another masterpiece and I think it's terrifying. I mean just plain scary. If you like horror movies , watch it. This would be in my top five for horror movies. It's unique in a good way. You need to pay attention if you want to understand it. Read More If you love Jack Nickelson, Stephen King suspense and horror you will love The Shining all the actors and actresses in this classic horror flick are awesome the define the best of acting. They made a remake of the shining but I feel that it came no where near the original movie so if you rent this make sure you get the 1980 version with Jack Nickelson . The acting was very well done and the kids bike made the little girl scene really cool because the sound affects of the wheels going from the rug to the wood to the rug to the floor gave me chills. Than the ending came and I had no fucking clue what the hell just happened the bear scene with the bartender and the poster in the end, it all shocked me. 1921??? I need to see this movie again. Read More I read the book many years ago and was scared to death. Recently, we saw what must have been a made-for-TV version Stephen King actually consulted on - unlike this version. The made-for-TV version was much closer to the book, and I believe had more dramatic effect. Jack Nicholson is, well......Jack Nicholson; scary in his own right. Unfortunately, Shelley Duvallâs representation of the wife lacked believability, and I can't get beyond her portrayal of Olive Oyle when I look at her. Her performance was pathetic. She looks like a bobblehead doll when she's "scared". This movie didn't scare me much at all, especially near the end (too busy laughing at Duvall). Maybe if you're a big Stephen King fan and read the book. If not... It over-relied on "dramatic" music to try to create the "scary" effect. It seemed like the movie lasted forever, without much really happening. And when things happened, it seemed more like an overdone cliche, like everyone was trying too hard. OK Jack, now it's time to look really twisted and scary. OK, Shelly, now let's look pathetic and scared. In this day and age, my teenage daughter and I prefer a little faster pace. We watched Hostel, The Shining the next, and I Know What You Did Last Summer in the same week, and The Shining came in 3rd place. It just wasn't really that scary.
