Daniel Stern Movies
Trained at the Hagen-Bergdorf studio, actor
Daniel Stern hopscotched between stage and films during his first professional years, appearing on Broadway in
Sam Shepard's True West and making his movie debut as Cyril in
Breaking Away (1979). Biding his time with bits in such films as
Stardust Memories (1980) and
One Trick Pony (1980), Stern enjoyed a career breakthrough in the role of obsessive record collector Shrevie in
Barry Levinson's
Diner (1982). While he has been seen in a number of major roles since then, Stern is most fondly remembered for his portrayal of Marv, the Larry Fine-like burglar in the two
Home Alone flicks of the early 1990s, and as cowboy wannabe Phil Berquist in
Billy Crystal's
City Slickers films. Stern's TV contributions include the role of Joey Nathan on the shortliver 1985 weekly
Hometown, and a longer stint as the adult Kevin Arnold, the never-seen narrator of
The Wonder Years (1989-92). Having previously directed several
Wonder Years installments, Daniel Stern made his feature-film directorial bow with the 1993 baseball fantasy
Rookie of the Year, and in 1995 functioned as both star and producer of the theatrical feature Tenderfoot. He went on to appear in Celtic Pride, the TV series Regular Joe, A Previous Engagement, and he played Drew Barrymore's father in her directorial debut Whip It. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Twenty-five years ago, Julia (Stevenson) and her passionate French lover Alex (Karyo) made a promise to meet up in the romantic Mediterranean hot spot where they exchanged their first glance. Now stuck in a marriage with a man who seems more interested in assembling jigsaw puzzles than pleasing his neglected wife, Julia takes her husband Jack (Stern) on a trip to Malta under the guise of celebrating a second honeymoon. But the truth is that Julia has been fantasizing about Alex for years, and she's determined to make good on her promise to meet him, perhaps rekindling their old flame in the process. When Alex shows up with his sexy young girlfriend (Kate Miles) in tow, Julia can't help but wonder if she and her lover have been leading the wrong lives all these years. Later, when Alex storms their holiday villa declaring his devotion to Julia for the whole world to hear, Jack makes his mission to become the lover his wife has always longed for. In order to make that transformation Jack will take lessons in dancing and loving from a passionate ex-chorus girl (Valerie Mahaffey), but when the time comes for Julia to decide between the husband she's never known and the lover she's always longed for, will his noble efforts be enough to save a failing marriage? ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Co-created by series star Daniel Stern, the ABC sitcom Regular Joe cast Stern as Joe Binder, the recently widowed owner of a hardware store. Joe lived with his well-meaning but overbearing father, Baxter (Judd Hirsch), his high-schooler son, Grant (John Francis Daley), and his college-coed daughter, Joanie (Kelly Karbacz) -- who also happened to be a single mother, with a cute baby daughter named Zoe. When not at home, Joe worked overtime at his store, assisted by Grant and high-strung clerk Sitvar (Brian George). Evidently, this property underwent a great many alterations before it was unveiled to the public, notably the changing of Stern's character name from Joe Herman to Joe Binder. City Slickers blends sight gags, one-liners, and sincerity, with both humor and drama arising from the characters and their situations. Mitch (Billy Crystal) is a radio station sales executive who finds himself in the throes of a mid-life crisis; accompanied by two friends, Phil (Daniel Stern) and Ed (Bruno Kirby) in the grip of similar problems, he heads to New Mexico for his birthday to participate in a two-week "vacation" cattle drive to Colorado. The three friends and the rest of their group, including an attractive, newly single young woman and two African-American dentists, are all urbanites lost when it comes to herding cattle and surviving on the prairie; it's up to authentic, almost mythic cowboy Curly (Jack Palance, who won an Oscar for the role), to whip them into shape. As various adventures occur along the way, including run-ins with outlaw cattlehands, treacherous natural mishaps, and Mitch's delivery of a newborn calf, the three "city slickers" open up to each other, learn to appreciate Curly's Old West values, and begin to resolve their midlife dilemmas. When Curly dies, it's left to Mitch, Phil, and Ed to bring in the herd. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi

Comic books may come and go, but every red-blooded boy in Springfield loves "Radioactive Man," and Bart Simpson (voice of Nancy Cartwright) is no exception. When Bart discovers the local comics shop, The Android's Dungeon, has a copy of the very rare first issue of "Radioactive Man," he's desperate to have it. Unfortunately, the comic is going for $100, and Bart only has $35 in his savings. Bart tries asking his parents for the money, looking under couch cushions, and (gasp!) even doing odd jobs for elderly Mrs. Glick (voice of Cloris Leachman), but he's still far short of the asking price, so Bart pools his finances with Milhouse (voice of Cartwright) and Martin (voice of Russi Taylor) and they buy the comic together. However, the three boys soon argue over who will get to keep the book, leading to an ugly scene in Bart's tree house. Daniel Stern also joins the voice cast in a brief parody of his narration of the TV series The Wonder Years. "Three Men and a Comic Book" first aired on May 9, 1991. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Made for the TNT cable network, The Court Martial of Jackie Robinson concentrates on the wartime service of major league baseball's first black player. Robinson (Andre Braugher), a star athlete at UCLA, is drafted during World War II. He hopes that his academic record will assure him entry into Officers Candidate School, but the racism inherent in the military at the time puts several roadblocks in his way. After finally making OCS, Robinson's belief in himself is strengthened tenfold--to the point that he refuses to bow to the "Jim Crow" laws regarding the seating arrangements on an Army bus, and is subsequently threatened with a court martial. Stan Shaw costars as boxing great Joe Louis, likewise a victim of prejudice during the war years (the script intimates that Louis was more willing to roll with the punches than Robinson). Ruby Dee, who played the ballplayer's wife in the 1950 film The Jackie Robinson Story, is here seen as Robinson's mother. The Court Martial of Jackie Robinson premiered on October 15, 1990. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
