A suspended FBI agent (Shannon Tweed) teams up with her ex-lover to nab a criminal in this soft-core item from Ralph S. Portillo, the director of Midnight Temptations and Malibu Summer. Tweed, a former Playboy model, is the undisputed queen of direct-to-video dreck in the '90s, appearing in over 45 films. Fernando Allende, Steven Bauer, and Jay Baker co-star, and genre enthusiasts will recognize Hugo Stiglitz from Incubo sulla Citta Contaminata and Guyana, Cult of the Damned. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

High school math teacher Ramiro Orellana somehow managed to run afoul of the military government in Santiago, and he has been classified as politically unreliable. Rather than go to the expense of locking him up, since he's not considered to be a definite threat to their regime, the rulers have chosen the relatively benevolent course of sentencing him to internal exile. As a result, he is uprooted from his comfortable but friendless city existence, and finds himself in a village which has rebuilt itself after being destroyed by a tidal wave a generation ago. Despite suffering from a campaign of harassment by one of the local officials, Ramiro gradually comes to know the villagers and comes to appreciate the splendid and dangerous qualities of the natural environment. He even has an honest romantic relationship with the daughter of an exiled Spanish republican; while they care for one another, neither one wants to relinquish their autonomy in a marriage. All in all, his exile turns out to be the best thing that has ever happened to him. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The valor and anguish of the Alamo is resurrected in this '80s effort that features a considerably accomplished cast. Brian Keith plays Davy Crockett and James Arness is Jim Bowie who, although at odds at times with his leader Colonel William Travis (Alec Baldwin), is able to focus upon the battle against the Mexican soldiers. Highlights of this film are the battle action scenes. ~ Rovi

The suprisingly short Spanish historical epic Virgen de Guadalupe is based on a venerable legend. The film is set during the era of the Conquistadors. A battle rages between the Aztec tribes of Mexico and the Spanish invaders. At the height of the carnage, a vision of the Virgin Mary brings the bloodshed to a halt. Virgen de Guadalupe was a surprisingly spiritual offering from Mexican director Alfredo Salazar, whose previous ouevre included such gems as Curse of the Aztec Mummy and Wrestling Women vs. the Aztec Ape. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Agatha Christie's Murder in Three Acts represents Peter Ustinov's fifth appearance as Dame Agatha's brilliant, insufferable Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. The scene is Acapulco, where retired actor Tony Curtis hosts two separate parties--both of them were blighted by the fatal poisoning of a guest. The police think the butler did it (honest!), but Poirot activates his "little grey cells" to pinpoint the killer amongst a group of wealthy and eccentric suspects. Filmed in Mexico, Murder in Three Acts was the latest (and to some reviewers the least) in a long line of Agatha Christie TV-movie specials produced by Stan Marguiles. Ustinov was Poirot in three of these, having first essayed the role in the theatrical feature Death on the Nile (78). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Hunter buys a ticket and catches up with Angie, ultimately falling in love with her--but is she merely an innocent bystander, or the "brains" behind the heist? Watch for Michael Dorn of Star Trek: The Next Generation fame as a highway patrolman. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Another of the many Sidney Sheldon novels given the TV-miniseries treatment in the 1970s and '80s, Master of the Game yielded a three-part, nine-hour extravaganza, with enough corporate and romantic intrigue to fill an entire television season. Covering nearly 100 years, the story (which remained astonishingly faithful to the book) begins in the late 19th century, when ruthless young Scottish entrepreneur Jamie McGregor (Ian Charleson) emigrates to South Africa, in hopes of accumulating enough wealth and power to get even with his longtime enemy, Dutch merchant Van der Merwe (Donald Pleasence). Thanks to an extremely prolific diamond mine, the money comes quickly -- as does vengeance, when McGregor deflowers Van der Merwe's convent-educated daughter, Margaret (Cherie Lunghi). The result of this indiscretion is a daughter named Kate (Dyan Cannon), who turns out to be the "Master" of the title. Upon attaining adulthood, Kate assumes control of her father's vast financial empire, ruling her inherited international conglomerate, and her husband, David Blackwell (David Birney), with an iron fist. The story continues into the next several generations, with Kate's lily-livered son, Tony (Harry Hamlin), giving birth to twin daughters, Eve and Alexandra (both played by Liane Langland). One is good, the other evil; the evil twin threatens threaten to destroy everything that Kate has so painstakingly built up. Eventually, they both become the victims of a sneering, malevolent gigolo (Fernando Allende) with a penchant for beating young women senseless. Told in flashback, the narrative comes to a head during Kate's 90th birthday celebration, an event tainted by the efforts of a mysterious killer to wipe the domineering matriarch and her family from the face of the earth. Largely filmed on location, Master of the Game was telecast by CBS from February 19 to 22, 1984. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

La Coquito is not a misspelling, it is a Spanish coining which combines masculine and feminine genders in a way which suggests scandal. La Coquito is the stage name a Cuban-born cabaret-singer (played by Ilyana Ross), who rises to prominence singing in low-down dives in Cuba and goes on to become a celebrity in pre-revolutionary Madrid as a cupletista. Her music is very sexually suggestive, and her earthy allure wins her the favors of many men, including one old man who buys a theater to showcase her art. This movie, illumining the life of a performer in a long-forgotten musical genre, is based on a novel by Joaquin Belda, which may be based on the real-life experiences of the cupletista "La Chelito." ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

A drama with plenty of symbolism, this film centers around a black boy found in the jungle near a waterfall by an elderly Mexican plantation owner, who raises the child as his own. His youngest daughter falls in love with the boy as they grow older, and they also grow affectionate with a black panther chained in their courtyard, which mysteriously gets loose and runs off. The mother, who hates the panther, tries to get romantic with the young man, but he refuses her. She runs away and is killed by the panther. The owner, who is not comfortable with the interracial romance, forces the young man into the job of mushroom taster: if he eats a poisoned mushroom and dies, the pickers will know which areas to stay away from. He escapes and has a liaison with the daughter, who then goes off by herself to the waterfall and meets the panther, which kills her in spite of her affection for it. The young man then returns to the jungle. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
