The seventh and final season of Growing Pains begins as Mike Seaver (Kirk Cameron) launches his teaching career with an assignment at an urban high school attached to the Community Health Clinic. This allows the series' producers to introduce two new characters this season: Mike's boss Mr. Tedesco, played by Fred Applegate), and troubled student Luke Brower--played by no less than Leonardo DiCaprio). Despite the trepidations of his parents Jason (Alan Thicke) and Maggie (Joanna Kerns), teacher Mike (Alan Thicke) arranges for homeless high school student Luke (Leonardo DiCaprio) to stay with the Seaver family. It soon becomes obvious that Luke is an adroit liar--and possibly worse than that, when Jason's precious cache of rare wine disappears. Luke (Leonardo DiCaprio) is afraid to go to the doctor, so Jason (Alan Thicke) goes along with him from moral support. Ironically, though Luke is given a clean bill of health, Jason is diagnosed with a hernia and slated for surgery! This means that Mike (Kirk Cameron) will have to take Jason's place at an important psychiatric banquet--but Mike shifts his responsiblities to Luke and Ben (Jeremy Miller). Jason (Alan Thicke) enters the rarefied world of journalism when newspaper editor Doug Stanton (Peter Jurasik) invites him to write a column for the Long Island "Sentinel". Believing that Stanton is stiffing Jason financially, Maggie (Joanna Kerns) shows up at the paper to complain--and is invited to write her own column as well. Aspiring actor Mike (Kirk Cameron) is convinced he's on the cusp of stardom when his character on the TV soaper "Big City Streets", Strong Waverly, is scheduled to emerge from a coma and speak his very first lines. At the same time, Luke (Leonardo DiCaprio) prepares to move out of the Seaver household and into the home of his foster family, the Kimballs. This episode was designed to showcase the series' newest regular, 17-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio, in the role of mercurial inner-city high schooler Luke Brower. Jockeying for a promotion at her job, Blanche (Rue McClanahan) is determined to complete her college degree in night school. Coming to her psych teacher, Professor Cooper (Jerry Hardin), for extra help, Blanche is surprised (but not altogether displeased) when the prof makes a play for her -- then offers to give her an automatic "A" in return for the usual certain favors. Josephine Premice makes her first -- and only -- series appearance as Maxine, the sister of Louise Jefferson (Isabel Sanford). Seeking out a perfect "gift" for Louise's surprise birthday party, husband George (Sherman Hemsley) arranges for Maxine and her son Jason (Justin Lord) to pay a visit to the Jefferson apartment. A fight between Tom Willis (Franklin Cover) and his son Alan (Jay Hammer) spills over into the apartment of the Willis' neighbors, the Jeffersons. A huge corporation intends to buy all the buildings on a certain city block, throwing people out of their apartments in order to construct huge luxury condos. One of the buildings is a dry-cleaning store owned by George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley), who becomes a darling of the media when he refuses to sell out. Rather than freeze in their own apartments, Tom and Helen Willis (Franklin Cover, Roxie Roker) and Harry Bentley (Paul Benedict) converge upon the toasty-warm Jefferson living room. Taking advantage of The Jeffersons' new later Wednesday-night time slot (9:30 p.m. EST), the producers served up an episode that would never have passed muster in "family hour." In true "Eddie Haskell" fashion, Raymond butters up Louise while simultaneously making life miserable for George.
